Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns? Political Circles Abuzz With Speculation

Jagdeep Dhankhar addressing Parliament before resignation

In an unexpected political development, Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has reportedly tendered his resignation from the post. Although the official confirmation from Rashtrapati Bhavan was still pending at the time of this writing, sources within the political establishment suggest that the resignation is genuine and has triggered a series of backchannel discussions within both government and opposition ranks.

If confirmed, this would mark a rare instance in India’s constitutional history where a sitting Vice President has voluntarily stepped down before completing the five-year tenure. Naturally, this news has created a storm of speculation—ranging from political reshuffles to internal differences within the ruling party.

Who is Jagdeep Dhankhar?

Jagdeep Dhankhar, a seasoned politician and constitutional expert, was elected the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dhankhar previously served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. His tenure in West Bengal was marked by frequent clashes with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, making him a controversial but highly visible political figure.

Born in Rajasthan, Dhankhar is also a lawyer by training and had practiced at the Supreme Court before joining politics. His deep understanding of legal frameworks, parliamentary procedures, and constitutional norms made him a strong choice for the Vice President’s role, which also makes him the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Why Did He Resign?

As of now, no official reason has been made public, but several theories are circulating in political and media circles:

1. Possible Cabinet Role

There are whispers that Dhankhar may be inducted into the Union Cabinet in a powerful portfolio—possibly Law, Home, or External Affairs. With PM Modi reshuffling responsibilities ahead of the 2029 roadmap, it wouldn’t be surprising if experienced hands like Dhankhar are brought back into the executive sphere.

2. Differences Within the System

Some sources claim there were ideological or administrative differences between Dhankhar and key figures in the current government. His repeated remarks about the independence of the judiciary and the functioning of Parliament were seen by many as subtle criticisms of the government’s style of working.

3. Personal or Health Reasons

There is also the possibility that the resignation is personal in nature—health concerns, or the desire to return to active public life without being bound by a constitutional office.

4. Pre-emptive Political Move

Some political commentators speculate this may be a strategic step before contesting for a bigger political role—perhaps even being groomed for a future Presidential bid, or to manage sensitive negotiations on behalf of the ruling party in upcoming state elections

What Happens Next?

If Dhankhar’s resignation is accepted, the President of India will formally notify the vacancy. According to Article 66 of the Constitution, a new Vice Presidential election must be held within six months of the vacancy being created. The Election Commission of India would then initiate the process, which involves an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament.

In the interim, the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha or another designated member may be assigned presiding duties.

Political Reactions and Media Buzz

Political parties across the spectrum have responded with a mix of shock, curiosity, and caution. The Congress party has called for clarity and transparency on the reasons behind the resignation. The Trinamool Congress, Dhankhar’s old rival in West Bengal, has termed it a “politically motivated move.” Meanwhile, several BJP leaders have hailed Dhankhar’s service and hinted that he may take on “bigger responsibilities” soon.

Social media is flooded with speculation, with #JagdeepDhankhar trending on Twitter/X and people debating what this means for the balance of power within India’s political hierarchy.

The Larger Implication

The Vice President’s office is not just symbolic—it plays a critical role in presiding over the Rajya Sabha, maintaining decorum in debates, and serving as the second-highest constitutional authority after the President. Dhankhar’s departure could temporarily affect the pace of legislative business, especially during the upcoming monsoon session.

Moreover, this episode highlights the increasing interplay between constitutional offices and active politics, a trend that has been noted in recent years.

Conclusion

While Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation is yet to be formally confirmed, all signs point to a significant political shift in the making. Whether it is a personal decision, a tactical move, or part of a larger reshuffle, one thing is clear: the coming weeks in Indian politics will be closely watched.

How “Blood Gold” Is Fueling Genocide in Sudan — and Why the UAE’s Gold Market Matters

Sudan’s war isn’t just about politics  it’s powered by gold. Armed groups control gold mines, and most of that gold ends up in the UAE’s global trading hubs. As the gold flows, so does the funding for brutal attacks against civilians making violence sustainable rather than temporary. More than 1.5 lakh people have been killed. Over 1.5 crore civilians have been displaced. This is not a civil war driven by ancient hatreds. This is a resource war, financed by gold and sustained by foreign actors. A Rich Land, a Starving Population Sudan is among Africa’s resource-rich nations. Yet millions face starvation, disease, and forced displacement. Entire villages have been erased. Hospitals no longer function. Children die not because food does not exist  but because armed groups control access to everything. The problem is not Sudanese society. The problem is who controls Sudan’s wealth. The Breaking of Sudan and the Resource Question Sudan and South Sudan were once a single cou...
